Where do you work and what do you do?
I work as a leading consultant at Sitowise Oy. Everything related to remediation is what I deal with daily basis, but I’m also responsible for internal and external R&D projects.
For how long have you been working with contamination sites and why did you got engaged with it in the beginning?
I’m going to start the clock at 2006, when I was working my masters thesis and had a side gig at the university of Helsinki. I got fascinated with the idea of biodegradation on one of the undergraduate classes. Before that I was not interested in environmental microbiology at all. It was a lightning strike, I felt like this would be the way to save the planet. Got sucked into research, and as it turns out, things are not that simple. But it has been a very satisfying road to follow.
So, NORDROCS- you represent the host country for this event – what are we to expect this year?
Same same but different? We all come to Nordrocs to hear about the latest applications and research, as well as to compare notes on administration. We will have a bit more focus on social impacts of remediation and biodiversity. We aim to have more interaction between senior experts and younger professionals and students, and on the practicalities side have a big focus on accessibility and inclusivity. Helsinki is beautiful in September, and we hope you get to see its beauty from land and sea.
It will be in Helsinki – why is that a perfect location for an event as NORDROCS?
I am very biased on this, but the first thing I want to say is, because it is beautiful, a bit off the beaten track, and worth seeing in itself. We have the perfect venue for lectures and social program, so networking and learning new things should be effortless.
How many NORDROCS-meetings have you been participating at?
This will be my fourth, and I’ve always been on the organiser side.
What are you most excited for according to NORDROC 2026?
Just having people together over a subject that I care deeply about
Can you please tell us about the upcoming site visit?
It will be a nice opportunity to get to know Helsinki and how it’s developed into the city it is today. We will be visiting several brownfield areas and new neighbourhoods by the sea, learn about the opportunities and challenges in brownfield development and just enjoy the city views from the sea.
