SUMMARY:End of waste: Workshop i miljöprovtagning - Best-practice och teorin bakom miljöprovtagning
DESCRIPTION:Why is correct sampling important \nAnalytical results form the basis for decision making in science\, technology\, industry\, society\, commerce; as such they must be fully reliable. But analytical results cannot be detached from the specific conditions under which they originate. Proper representative sampling is the critical success factor before analysis. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) describes all the necessary principles\, actions and equipment demands needed for representative sampling.  \n  \nThis short course deals with how to acquire representative samples from heterogeneous materials\, lots and processes to be used for material characterisation and for Quality Control in general\, for example in industrial processing & manufacturing\, for environmental monitoring a.o.  All sampling processes must therefore be in compliance with the Theory and Practice of Sampling (TOS)\, to be able guarantee against hidden economic losses or faulty characterisations and classifications..

SUMMARY:Ecological Index of Concern (EIoC) supporting ecological soil function restoration Invitation online coffee break meeting
DESCRIPTION:To reach the target of “Zero Net Land Take” by 2050 as established by the French “Climate and Resilience” Act\, technical and research institutions\, municipalities and consultancy firms are stepping up initiatives to identify industrial or urban brownfields that are suitable for ecological restoration\, with the goal of incorporating more green spaces into our cities. \nAn “Ecological Index of Concern” (EIoC) has therefore been developed to investigate the potential risk associated with soil pollution. It is based on the principles of the TRIAD method (NF ISO 19240) and\, in particular\, on the combination of the different approaches (ecological\, chemical and eco-toxicological) for assessing risk to ecosystems. \nThe EIoC defines three categories of polluted sites of which: \n\nthe state raises “no concern”\, meaning that the site might be readily upgraded to a site for ecological use;\nthe state raises “moderate concern”\, meaning that the site can be reclassified as either of the other two states once the bioavailable character of the pollution has been established;\nthe state gives “cause for concern” and require more extensive investigation\, such as an Ecosystem Risk Assessment (ERA).\n\nThe Ecological Index of Concern (EIoC) can be applied to urban or peri-urban industrial brownfields that are contaminated with 5 PTEs (potentially toxic elements)\, in this case\, arsenic\, cadmium\, copper\, lead and zinc\, and with the PAHs listed in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s list of priority PAHs. A prerequisite for carrying out an Ecological Index of Concern procedure is that the contaminated site in question must sustain an evolving ecosystem (significant ground cover and one or several soil functions).
